Material Advantage Travel Grants

Material Advantage Travel Grants

The Material Advantage program now offers $500 travel grants to student chapters in support of attending AISTech, the TMS annual meeting, or the ACerS and ASM annual meetings held at MS&T.  Applications for travel grants to MS&T are due before Oct. 2, 2006 and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.  For information and an application visit http://www.materialadvantage.org/mst06/travelgrant.asp.

Student Monitors

Students may partially defray expenses by serving as session monitors.  Monitors assist session chairs, record session attendance statistics, assist with audio/visual equipment, etc.  Monitor positions are limited and are assigned on a first-come basis.  Interested students should e-mail Christina Raabe at raabe@tms.org before Sept. 25.

Receive a detailed introduction to the Material Advantage program: membership benefits, student chapter development and member recruitment. Plus, share best practices, network and develop contacts. Chapter chairs are encouraged to attend.

Mock Interviews – Hyatt, Level 4 - FULL

Professionals from various industries will be on-site to hold 30 minute "mock interviews" with students. The purpose of a mock interview is to provide the student with practical experience and feedback on the interviewing process. Interviewers will provide feedback and coaching in this unique, private setting. To reserve an interview time complete and return the Mock Interview Reservation Form by October 2, 2006 (any remaining available times will be filled at orientation). This relaxed, casual and fun atmosphere is designed for students, faculty, government, and industry representatives to make connections and share experiences of professional growth. *Beer, soft drinks, snacks and music will be provided. Each Material Advantage chapter is encouraged to nominate a student member to participate in this speaking contest.  The subject of the presentation must be technical but can relate to any aspect of materials science and engineering. Register in advance to participate or plan to attend to support your fellow studnets. Tuesday, October 17
  Student Contests

10 – 11 a.m.

Ceramic Mug Drop – Duke Energy Center - Exhibit Hall B

It’s a competition of brawn and beauty . . . mugs fabricated from ceramic raw materials by students are judged on both aesthetics and breaking thresholds.  Mugs are dropped from successively higher levels until the breaking threshold is reached.  The mug with the highest successful drop distance wins!  To participate, register by September 15 by e-mailing Bob Schwarts at rwschwar@umr.edu.  If you are not a contestant, come watch this smashing event!

11 a.m. – 12:30 a.m. 

Putting Contest – Duke Energy Center, Exhibit show floor (near booths 249 & 349)

Teams of four students compete using the putters and balls they fabricated!  Each team member must have his or her own putter and ball, which are judged prior to the competition.  Prizes are awarded for aesthetics, closest putt and best putting team (the team achieving the shortest combined distance from the hole).  To compete, register by September 15 by e-mailing Bob Schwartz at rwschwar@umr.edu.  All students are encouraged to attend to support their fellow students in this fun event!
