Crossing the Border
Any foreign visitor wishing to enter Canada must have a valid Passport, including U.S. travelers. A border services officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa, if you are arriving from a country for which one is required. Visit Visa Information for details. Meeting attendees from countries that require a visa to enter Canada are reminded that the process of obtaining a visa may take several months. You are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and begin the application process early.
Driving a rental car across the U.S.-Canadian border is usually not a problem, as long as the arrangement was made with the car rental company. Make sure to have a copy of the rental agreement that clearly states your permission to take the vehicle across the border.
Transportation between Airport and Hotels
Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL), located 19 miles from downtown Montréal, is a world-class facility that accommodates more than nine million travelers in nearly 169,000 aircraft operations per year. There are direct flights from Montréal-Trudeau to more than 130 regular and seasonal destinations in Canada, the U.S. and internationally served by 32 commercial air carriers.
Featuring 24-hour service, 7 days a week, 365-days a year, the 747 Express bus costs only $9. Fares can be purchased from the automated dispensers in the international arrivals hall. The exact $9 fare can be paid in cash with exact change only. Only coins are accepted (no bank bills). The route features nine downtown stops conveniently located near major hotels and takes approximately 25 – 30 minutes each way, depending on traffic. Download the 747 Express Bus map.
You will find taxis available on demand (no reservation required) on the arrivals level near the central exit located in front of the cloakroom, where a dispatcher will assist you. The approximate fare into downtown Montreal is $40.00. Visa, MasterCard and American Express credit cards are accepted. Some drivers accept U.S. currency but provincial regulations require customers to pay in Canadian currency.
