The Development and Applications of Niobium-Containing HSLA
The Development and Applications of Niobium-Containing HSLA Steels
G. Tither
The technology and metallurgical design of niobium-containing steels is described relative to the wide variety of products (plate, strip, sheet, sections, bars, forgings and castings) to which this family of steels is applicable. Emphasis is placed on alloy design and controlled processing. Many applications of niobium microalloyed steels in the marketplace are presented and discussed including: linepipe, pipeline fittings, offshore constructions, ship plate, structural sections for buildings and mining arches, automotive (body panels, suspension parts, wheels, chassis members, forged components), off-highway vehicles, mining equipment, reinforcing bar, fasteners and bolts, wire, cast nodes and others.
This paper was a plenary presentation at the 2nd International Conference on HSLA Steels held in 1990.
