Join us for a collaborative Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon to increase the visibility of underrepresented scientists and engineers in the disciplines served by the Materials Science & Technology (MS&T) partner societies.
Wikipedia is the fifth most popular website in the world, with more than 32 million views a day. However, the contributions of the broad diversity of materials scientists and engineers are often buried or overlooked on Wikipedia resources. Join us to help combat these biases and make the achievements of underrepresented materials scientists and engineers more readily discoverable to the world.
The virtual event will open with a tutorial on Wikipedia as a useful tool and an editing demonstration by representatives from 500 Women Scientists, the organization that pioneered the concept of Wikipedia Edit-A-Thons to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEMM. Facilitators will then guide you through making your first edits at your own pace, using biographies, resources, and examples that will be provided as part of the workshop. You will leave the session with the skills and knowledge to continue this important work, either with the colleagues that you meet at the event, or others that you can share your knowledge with.
This program also serves as the inaugural Annual MS&T Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Engagement Event, co-organized by ACerS, AIST, and TMS.
