TMS Professional Development Opportunities at MS&T22

TMS presents the following activities at MS&T22 to help participants enhance their technical and professional skills during their time at MS&T22. Visit the Professional Development section of the MS&T22 website for details on these events and to register.

TMS Additive Manufacturing Materials and Processes Workshop
Date: Sunday, October 9, 2022
Time: 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Location: Westin Convention Center Hotel

The purpose of this workshop is to familiarize participants with AM processes and enable them to explore further to address their specific industry needs and leverage research opportunities. Learn more about the scope of the workshop, view the course schedule, and meet the instructors on the MS&T22 Workshops page.

Improve Your Networking Skills Workshop by TMS
Date: Monday, October 10, 2022
Time: 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Learn skills you can use at MS&T22 and beyond! This one-hour event invites students and professionals to develop a practical approach to networking. Emily Kinser of 3M and Vice Chair of the TMS Professional Development Committee will present an interactive learning opportunity where attendees will identify personal networking goals, learn how to lower barriers to personal networking, and develop a personal elevator speech.  This will be followed by a hands-on networking activity to practice new skills. Participants from all career levels are encouraged to attend, so that students and early-career professionals can learn from their more experienced colleagues. There is no cost for MS&T22 attendees to participate in this workshop, but pre-registration is requested. If you plan to attend, please fill out this simple registration form.

For Early-Career Professionals

Join fellow TMS members and other members of the MS&T22 community at the following luncheon and lecture event for early-career professionals.

TMS Emerging Professionals Tutorial Luncheon & Lecture
Date: Tuesday, October 11, 2022
Time: Noon to 2:00 p.m.
Presenter: Joy Gockel, Colorado School of Mines
Lecture Title: "Making Opportunities and Breaking Barriers"

Making things and breaking things is Joy Gockel's lab motto, but this motto often applies to life, too. This presentation will dig into the history of additive manufacturing and 3D printing, paralleled with career path stories from the pioneers and Gockel's own personal experience. Self-reflection themes will be presented to inspire attendees to make the most of early-career opportunities and break perceived barriers.

Joy Gockel is an Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Colorado School of Mines (Mines) and Executive Director of ADAPT, the Mines additive manufacturing research center and industry consortium. She joined Mines from Wright State University where she was an Assistant Professor in Mechanical and Materials Engineering. Prior to her faculty positions, she was a Lead Engineer at GE Aviation’s Additive Technology Center. She earned her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Her current research specializes in connecting the additive manufacturing processing-structure-properties-performance relationships. For her research and professional contributions, she has been awarded the 2020 ASTM International Young Professional in Additive Manufacturing Award, 2021 TMS Young Leaders Professional Development Award, and the 2021 International Outstanding Young Researcher in Freeform and Additive Manufacturing (FAME Jr.) Award.

All MS&T22 registrants are welcome to attend the lecture portion of this event, but to receive lunch, please purchase a ticket through the MS&T22 registration form.
